About the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution ("NSDAR" or "DAR")

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was founded in 1890 by a group of women for historical, educational and patriotic purposes. Efforts of the DAR are directed toward the following ideals:
  • To perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence;

  • To cherish, maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom;

  • To foster true patriotism and love of country; and

  • To aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.

There are currently over 200,000 active members of the DAR. Membership in the DAR is open to any woman who can trace her lineage to a Revolutionary War ancestor. The organization is directed by the National Society from Washington D.C. and is implemented by state societies and local chapters.
