About the National Society Daughters of the American
Revolution ("NSDAR" or "DAR")
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was founded in 1890 by a group of women for historical, educational and patriotic purposes. Efforts of the DAR are directed toward the following ideals:
There are currently over 200,000 active members of the DAR. Membership
in the DAR is open to any woman who can trace her lineage to a
Revolutionary War ancestor. The organization is directed by the National
Society from Washington D.C. and is implemented by state societies and
local chapters.
Membership in the DAR
Membership in the DAR is open to any woman over the age of 18 who can trace her lineage to a Revolutionary War ancestor. Membership is available to children in the Children of the American Revolution (CAR) and to men in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). The DAR maintains a great deal of genealogical information which has been researched and verified by existing DAR members. Additional information about membership in the DAR is available from any DAR member and from the State DAR Society. About the Mary Chilton Chapter, NSDAR
The Sioux Falls Chapter of the NSDAR was organized in 1915 by 12 women as charter members. The Chapter was named in honor of Mary Chilton, a young woman who arrived in the New World in 1620 on the Mayflower. Tradition says that she was the first woman from the Mayflower to step onto the new land after leaping out of the small boat carrying passengers to the shore. Currently the Mary Chilton Chapter has approximately 80 members. The Chapter meets monthly from March through November of each year.
